The Blind Test
Can you tell vodkas apart when you don't know which is which?
Question
Every taste happens twice: once on your tongue, and once in your expectations. When you know which vodka is the expensive one, you taste “expensive.” What’s left when the labels disappear?
Hypothesis
Blind, you’ll still detect genuine differences — in burn, texture, aroma, and finish — but they won’t line up neatly with price or reputation. And the differences will be smaller than the marketing suggests.
Materials
- A bottle of Valence Vodka
- One or two other vodkas already in your cabinet
- 3 identical glasses per taster
- Sticky notes and a pen
- A helper to pour, or a way to shuffle glasses yourself
- Plain water and unsalted crackers
Procedure
- Have your helper pour half an ounce (15 ml) of each vodka into identical glasses, out of your sight, marking the bottom of each glass with a code known only to them.
- If tasting solo: label the glass bottoms yourself, close your eyes, and shuffle the glasses on the counter until you’ve lost track.
- All samples should be at the same temperature — room temperature reveals the most (see Experiment #001).
- Smell each sample first, in order. Write notes on each before any tasting.
- Taste each with a small sip. Score each 1–5 on: aroma, smoothness, texture, and finish. Reset with water and a cracker between samples.
- Guess which sample is which. Then reveal the codes.
What to Observe
Two results matter. First: could you distinguish the samples at all? Note what gave each away — a sharper burn, a sweeter nose, a rougher finish. Second: did your guesses match reality? A wrong guess isn’t failure; it’s the most honest data in this whole series. If a taster confidently identifies the “cheap one” and it turns out to be their usual favorite, that’s a finding worth writing down.
The Science
Expectation isn’t a bias layered on top of taste — it’s part of the mechanism. Sensory researchers have repeatedly shown that labels, prices, and stories measurably change reported flavor experience, which is why every credible tasting panel, ours included, works blind. Meanwhile the genuine differences between vodkas come down to trace chemistry: residual congeners — the flavor-active minor compounds that survive distillation — plus proofing water and texture. Those differences are real but subtle, which is exactly the regime where expectation dominates. Blinding doesn’t remove your palate’s skill. It removes everything else.
Conclusion
We put Valence into this lineup on purpose. If it earns its place blind, that means more to us than any label ever could. Whatever you found — record it. A palate that’s been tested is worth more than a palate that’s been flattered.
Variable Tested
