Water Matters
Does the kind of water you add to vodka change how it tastes?
Question
Distilleries argue endlessly about proofing water — the water used to bring a spirit to bottling strength. If water were neutral, nobody would argue. Add four different waters to the same vodka: can you tell them apart?
Hypothesis
Distilled and reverse osmosis water will dilute cleanly, changing intensity but not character. Spring and mineral waters will add something of their own — a texture, a faint taste — and mineral water will be the most detectable.
Materials
- A bottle of Valence Vodka
- Distilled water
- Spring water
- Still mineral water
- Tap water or reverse osmosis water
- 4 small glasses, labeled on the bottom with sticky notes
- A measuring spoon
- Pen and paper
Procedure
- First, taste the waters alone, at room temperature. Note any differences in flavor or feel. This is your baseline.
- Pour half an ounce (15 ml) of Valence into each labeled glass.
- Add 2 teaspoons (10 ml) of a different water to each glass. Stir each gently with a clean spoon.
- Smell all four, then taste all four, in any order — but pause and reset between samples with a sip of plain water.
- If you have a helper, have them shuffle the glasses so you taste blind and try to match each sample to its water.
What to Observe
The distilled-water sample should taste like a textbook dilution: same vodka, lower volume. The mineral-water sample often feels different before it tastes different — slightly weightier, sometimes with a faint chalky or saline note on the finish. Tap water results vary wildly by ZIP code; chlorinated tap water can add a detectable off-note. If you can reliably pick the mineral-water glass while blind, the effect is real for you.
The Science
Water is rarely just H2O. Dissolved minerals — calcium, magnesium, bicarbonates — carry their own subtle tastes and change how a liquid feels on the palate. Municipal tap water can add chlorine compounds detectable at remarkably low concentrations. This is why distilleries treat proofing water as an ingredient: at bottling, a spirit at 40% alcohol is more than half water, so the water’s character is fully present in every pour. Valence is proofed with purified water for exactly this reason — dilution should be a controlled variable, not a surprise.
Conclusion
Water is an ingredient with a flavor of its own, and it’s in every drink you’ll ever mix. Choose it the way you’d choose any other ingredient — and remember the result next time you build a vodka soda.
