Glass Matters
Does the shape of a glass change how much aroma reaches your nose?
Question
Wine drinkers obsess over glassware. Vodka usually gets whatever’s clean. Does the shape of the vessel actually change what you smell — or is it ceremony?
Hypothesis
The narrower the opening relative to the bowl, the more concentrated the aroma at the rim. The wine glass will deliver the most; the mug will deliver the least.
Materials
- A bottle of Valence Vodka
- A wine glass, or any glass that curves inward toward the rim
- A straight-sided tumbler or drinking glass
- A coffee mug
- Pen and paper
Procedure
- Pour half an ounce (15 ml) of Valence into each vessel. Same pour, same temperature — the glass is the only variable.
- Let all three rest for 2 minutes so the air above each pour can equilibrate.
- Without swirling, bring each vessel to your nose at the same distance and take a short, gentle sniff. Rank the aroma intensity.
- Now swirl each gently and smell again. Note whether the ranking changes.
- Optional: taste from your top-ranked and bottom-ranked vessels and note whether the flavor seems different even though the liquid is identical.
What to Observe
The wine glass should present a noticeably fuller aroma — you may pick up faint sweet or grain-like notes that the mug simply doesn’t deliver. The tumbler usually lands in the middle. After swirling, the differences typically get bigger, not smaller. If the same liquid tastes different from different glasses, you’ve just demonstrated that a lot of “taste” happens before the first sip.
The Science
Above any spirit sits a layer of air called the headspace, loaded with evaporated aroma compounds. A bowl that narrows toward the rim traps and funnels that headspace toward your nose; a wide opening lets it drift away and dilute into the room. Swirling increases the liquid’s surface area, speeding evaporation and recharging the headspace. And because much of what we call taste is actually smell — including aromas that reach the nose from the back of the mouth as you sip — the glass shape changes the whole experience, not just the sniff.
Conclusion
The glass is part of the instrument. If you want to evaluate a vodka honestly, the vessel matters as much as the pour. Keep the winning glass in mind for every other experiment in this series.
