Finding the Flavor Proof

How does alcohol concentration change what you can taste in a vodka?

Question

Valence is bottled at 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume). Is that the best strength for tasting it? Professional spirit assessors routinely dilute samples before evaluation. Why would adding water reveal more, not less?

Hypothesis

As alcohol concentration drops, the warming sensation of ethanol will fade first, and quieter flavors — grain sweetness, texture, minerality — will become easier to notice. Somewhere below 80 proof there’s a concentration where the vodka tastes like more, not less.

Materials

  • A bottle of Valence Vodka
  • Distilled or filtered water, at room temperature
  • 3 small glasses
  • A measuring spoon or jigger
  • Pen and paper

Procedure

  1. Pour half an ounce (15 ml) of Valence into each of three glasses.
  2. Leave glass one at full strength. Add 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of water to glass two, and 1 tablespoon (15 ml) to glass three. Glass three is now roughly half strength — about 40 proof.
  3. Smell all three in order, full strength first. Note how the character of the aroma changes, not just the intensity.
  4. Taste in the same order, taking small sips with a pause between glasses.
  5. Write down which glass showed the most distinct flavors — not the strongest sensation, the most information.

What to Observe

At full strength, expect ethanol warmth to arrive first and dominate the finish. In the middle glass, that warmth steps back and you may notice a faint sweetness and a rounder texture. At half strength, the vodka may taste softer and slightly sweet — or it may start to taste thin. The interesting result is where your crossover point is.

The Science

Ethanol isn’t just a carrier — it’s an active sensation. It stimulates the same nerve receptors that respond to heat, which is why high-proof spirits “burn.” That burn competes with everything else on your palate. Dilution also changes the chemistry of the surface of the liquid: adding water pushes certain aroma compounds out of solution and up into the air above the glass, which is why a splash of water can make a spirit smell stronger. Distillers call the flavor-active trace compounds in a spirit congeners, and dilution changes which of them you can perceive. You’re not weakening the vodka. You’re re-tuning it.

Conclusion

Bottling proof is a starting point, not a command. Somewhere between 80 proof and half strength is the concentration where Valence tells you the most — and you’ve now measured where that is for your own palate.
